Psychotherapy is another talk therapy. Similar to counselling in a number of ways however psychotherapy is a more in depth process and lasts longer than supportive counselling. When undergoing psychotherapy both the client and the therapist engage at a much deeper level. One will explore in depth their feelings, beliefs and thoughts including past experiences from childhood through to adulthood. Developing a strong therapeutic alliance with your therapist is crucial to this work. The client shares personal and sometimes traumatic experiences, emotions can be challenging and frightening, one needs to be able to trust their psychotherapist to support them through that personal journey. The therapeutic relationship is essential to effective treatment. Within this relationship the client can confront and understand their underlying issues and problems. A courageous curiosity is required by the client and this is facilitated by the psychotherapist. This ultimately enables the client a broader understanding of themselves.
